About the Southern Dive Sites

Hin Daeng – The Red Rock

Hin Daeng is the most famous dive site in the southern region, rivaling the beauty of Richelieu Rock. During low tide, only the peaks of the rocks are visible above the water, but beneath the surface, it extends to depths of 30-45 meters, where the rock meets the sandy bottom. Its western and southern sides are adorned with fan corals, purple and red soft corals. On its northern and eastern sides, you’ll find hard corals and pinnacles. The underwater ecosystem is incredibly diverse and impressive. You can discover numerous macro creatures like ghost pipefish, colorful nudibranchs, and countless shrimps in the crevices. Dense schools of fish, such as mackerel, tuna, and trevally, captivate with their mesmerizing actions. Giant yellowtail barracuda, as well as sightings of manta rays and whale sharks, are possible here and at the neighboring Hin Muang, although these encounters are not guaranteed.

Hin Muang – The Purple Rock

Located approximately 100 meters from Hin Daeng, there is a crescent-shaped underwater limestone rock formation. The top of the rock sits at depths of 8-16 meters, while the bottom extends to 45-60 meters into the sandy seabed. Due to its considerable depth and often strong currents, it’s recommended for experienced and advanced divers only.  Two buoy lines guide you down to the rock, aiding in the descent. The rock is densely covered in purple soft corals, and among the crevices and corals, you’ll find many special critters. For macro lovers, the longnose hawk fish, harlequin shrimp, and nudibranchs are the highlights. However, the main attraction here is the massive schools of fish, batfish, giant-, yellowtail barracuda, and trevally swirling around the rock. Open-water fish thrive here, especially when it is rich in plankton. Additionally, oceanic mantas, whale sharks, and reef sharks may appear at any moment.

Koh Haa Islands

This island group comprises six small, uninhabited limestone islands. There are numerous dive sites among the islands, with the Cathedral being the most renowned. The underwater caves offer great fun for cavern divers. Koh Haa’s unique rock formations and chimneys also provide a distinctive diving experience. Those with less experience can enjoy the crystal-clear waters of the Laguna and the sloping reefs. The marine life here is similar to that of the Phi Phi Islands, and during the dives, you might encounter everything from tiny macro creatures to dense schools of fish.

Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands offer vertical cliffs, turquoise seas, beautiful bays, and exotic marine life waiting to be explored both above and below the water’s surface. Within the Phi Phi National Park, you’ll find numerous dive sites that provide unique experiences. The most beautiful dive sites are Bida Nok, Bida Nai islands, and along the cliffs of Phi Phi Lei. Depending on your experience level, you can dive on coral-covered slopes, walls adorned with soft corals, smaller and larger caves, and through arched rock formations. The marine life is incredibly diverse, and you can spot various unique critters on the walls, from tiny clownfish to ghost pipefish. If you prefer larger fish, barracudas, tunas, jackfish, and mackerels offer spectacular sightings. Additionally, encounters with reef sharks, leopard sharks, and turtles are common. Even whale sharks occasionally visit the area, so it’s worth keeping an eye on the open sea.
