About the Dive Sites
Racha Yai Island is located 20 km south of Phuket and is about an hour’s boat ride from the pier. The eight dive sites around the island are perfect for beginners, but there are also attractions for advanced divers, too.
On its eastern side, you’ll find five sandy bays breaking up the rocky coastline where most dives take place. Various-sized rocks and coral pieces are scattered on the white sandy slopes, and this is where most marine life congregates.
Among the hard corals, you’ll find numerous giant clams, sea stars, sea urchins and countless tiny critters. Pipefish, shrimps, moray eels, octopuses, and cuttlefish hide among the corals. In the bays, barracudas and tuna schools, along with colorful reef fish, can be spotted.
Three shipwrecks can be found around the island at depths of 18-25 meters, offering attractions for advanced divers. In recent years, artificial reefs have been created around the island, providing shelter for many fish species.
The western side of the island features two beautiful bays, where you’ll also find easier dive sites and an underwater sculpture park. Life-sized elephant statues, an underwater temple, artificial reef and natural rock coral formations alternate. The seabed here is sandy, and visibility ranges from 15-25 meters.
The Racha Yai diving trip is available year-round, and tours depart daily.
